X symbol magic in IT industry

or what will be the most good name for new IT product

Have you ever thought why are so many IT products with symbol X in their names? Just remember: XBox, ActiveX, X-Windows, etc. etc.

Moreover very often X symbol in IT industry means "success". First of all we can remember Unix OS. Almost everybody knows about this OS or at least heard about it. Considerably less people know that this operational system was based on another project: Multics. Actually Unix functionality was initially a subset of Multics features.
Why in such case that product was forgotten while Unix (and its clones) still run on millions computers worldwide? Maybe because Multics did not have X in its name?

Next think about Unix'  descendant: Linux.  Why Linus Torvalds  gave such name to his product? OK you say that it is just a part Torvalds' name + part of Unix' name. But why not Unilin or Linun or something like that. Why Linus took only one (the last) letter from Unix' name?

This list can be continued easily. For example: why OLE controls became ActiveX components? Or the very last crazy thing: AJAX (I will right in one of my next posts why I think it is crazy). Would it be so popular if it does not have X in its name?

So here is my suggestion (draw your attention - it's free :-)):
  • if you are developing new software product - try to call it XSomething or SomethingX;
  • if you plan to create new mobile phone - why would not call it XPhone?
  • Finally you can continue this list: xPrinter, xComputer, xHome, xWorld, xUniverse. ...

NB: all above can be considered as a joke ... but can be not :-)
